St. John's Episcopal Church extends a special welcome to newcomers and anyone looking for a spiritual home. St. John’s is a wonderfully diverse community of faith rooted in the heart of downtown Stamford, where the Holy Spirit is leading us toward a new humanity in Christ. As an outgoing and inclusive parish, we invite you to join us in our worship of Jesus Christ.

When are the worship services?

Services are celebrated every Sunday at 8:00 and 10:15 a.m. and Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Weekday Eucharist is Wed. at 7 a.m. and Thursday at 12:10 p.m. Prayers for healing are offered after each worship service.

 

What is its ministry?

St. John's seeks to serve Christ in all persons. Our mission invites us to:

  • Celebrate God in the beauty of holiness through the richness of Anglican worship and glorious music;
  • Strengthen our spiritual journeys through prayer, study and scripture; and
  • Serve as instruments of God’s peace, justice and love in the world.

 

Are educational programs and childcare available?

Child care for infants through 3 years is offered during the 10:15 A.M. Sunday Service. Godly Play classes, available for children Pre-K through fifth grade, are held each Sunday from September to June, starting at 10:00 A.M. One Godly Play class for all ages is offered in the summer. Click on this link to learn more about Godly Play. The Journey to Adulthood programs Rite 13 and J2A are offered for young people in Middle and High School. After class children join us to celebrate the Holy Communion.

 

What about adult Christian education?

We offer a wide variety of Christian education and formation classes for children, youth and adults. Our opportunities include Bible study, meditation, special book studies, contemplative prayer, and other offerings to deepen our faith and our life in community. There are Christian education classes available for children and youth and a variety of Bible study, meditation and other classes for adults. 

 

Is pastoral care provided?

Pastoral care is provided by our Rector, the Rev. Dr. James R. Wheeler, Associate Rector, the Rev. Julia A. Fritts and lay members. Visits to the home, hospital, and nursing home are regular aspects of St. John’s ministry. If or a loved one is ill or in need, and you would like prayers or a visit to be scheduled, please call Fr. Wheeler (203-348-2619, ext. 13) or Mother Julia (203-348-2619, ext. 18).

 

Is there music?

Music is a special ministry at St. John's, led by our esteemed Director of Music, Dr. Sean Jackson, and doctorate from Juilliard St. John’s features the largest organ between NYC and New Haven, a rich and wonderful sounding instrument. Organ and hymns are part of the 8 A.M. Sunday worship. At 10:15 A.M. we have full choir. Do you sing? We have choirs both for children and adults and welcome new singers. There are often special programs during services and there are special events and concerts throughout the year. We also offer a beautiful Christmas pageant which is viewed by more than 1000 members of the community every year.

Do I have to be an Episcopalian?

No, everyone is welcome. In addition, all baptized persons who recognize Christ in the Sacrament are invited to share in the Holy Communion during services, regardless of denomination. Others are welcome at God's altar for a blessing.

 

Do I have to dress up?

No, neat casual attire is quite acceptable.
