About St. John’s
Since 1742, Anglican Christians have witnessed to the gospel of Jesus Christ on the same corner of downtown Stamford. During the past 280 years, through revolution, war, industrialization, deindustrialization, social transformation, and countless variations in the New England weather, St. John’s Church has been a beacon of light in Connecticut’s southwestern most city, and it continues to be a vital part of Stamford’s thriving downtown.
St. John’s members are among the 85 million Christians around the world who trace a common descent from the Church of England and who are bound by ties of common affection within a family of churches known as the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is the member church in the United States.
Over the years, individuals and families from every walk of life have found a spiritual home at St. John’s, and we hope that you will too.

What we believe
Our beliefs are articulated by the historic creeds of the Christian church, the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed. We believe Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation. The unique Anglican interpretation of Christian doctrine may be found in the thirty-nine Articles of Religion.
How we worship
Our life of worship, prayer, and devotion is ordered by the Book of Common Prayer. The distinctive liturgical piety that characterizes Episcopal worship has been rooted in the Prayer Book tradition since the publication of the first English Prayer Book in 1549. The Book of Common Prayer provides an accessible, Scriptural, and beautiful framework of prayer to worship the Lord “in the beauty of holiness.”
How we serve
Members of St. John’s Church have for nearly three centuries been leaders in serving the Stamford community. Today, the congregation partners with local agencies of charity and mercy in serving the neediest members of our city in two principal ways: financially, through the St. John’s Community Foundation; and by putting boots on the ground through our Outreach Committee.
